Welcome
to the Montreal Nature Conservation Project

We believe that public access to nature is essential for well-being, and that protecting it is a shared responsibility
Our goal is to create new nature reserves in proximity to Montreal
This will:

Expand current access to nature near Montreal

Protect natural ecosystems threatened by urban sprawl

Ensure quality access to nature for future generations

Local natural ecosystems are irreplaceable
According to the Institut de la Statistique du Québec, the Montreal Metropolitan Area's current population growth rate is ~5% per year. Like all cities, as Montreal grows and expands, it will encroach upon and fragment natural ecosystems, leading to irreversible ecological damage.
Without adequate expansion, existing natural spaces will become increasingly overused, leading to overcrowding, reduced visitor experience, and ecological degradation due to heavy foot traffic and disturbance. Meanwhile, smaller undeveloped parcels of land near the city are rapidly being lost to residential and commercial development. This dual pressure of rising demand and shrinking supply reduces equitable access to nature for the people of Montreal and surrounding areas, and weakens the region’s capacity to provide ecosystem services such as temperature reduction in the hot summers.
Here is the good news: if we act now, we can create new local nature reserves near Montreal, conserving them for perpetuity. Large swathes of undeveloped land, in the ballpark of 50-100 acres, can be purchased within 1-2 hour driving distance of Montreal for in the range of $500k-1000k. If 5% Montrealers pitched in $5 today, we’d be able to start setting up a new nature reserve tomorrow. Join the Montreal Nature Conservation Project to help make this dream a reality!
